Udupi Pilgrimage Circuit: Sringeri, Kollur & Krishna Matha

TOUR RATING
New on Evynx

Sringeri, Kollur Mookambika, Udupi Krishna Matha - Karnataka's three great shrines.

About this tour

Karnataka holds three of India's most significant pilgrimage centres within a 200-km radius of each other: Sringeri, where Adi Shankaracharya established the first of his four mathas in the 8th century; Kollur, where the Mookambika Shakti shrine draws devotees from across the subcontinent; and Udupi, where Sri Krishna Matha - the Dvaita Vedanta seat founded by Madhvacharya - hosts one of South India's most active ritual traditions. This four-day circuit visits all three in a sequence that follows the geography naturally: Bangalore to Sringeri overland, then west to Kollur on the coast, then south to Udupi for two nights. The pace is devotional rather than rushed. At each shrine, the itinerary is built around the key puja timings - Sharadamba's Abhishekam at 8am, Mookambika's midday darshan, and Krishna Matha's Sayam puja at 6:30pm. Between the shrines, the route passes through the Agumbe rainforest, the Kodachadri foothills and the Souparnika River valley - the pilgrimage and the landscape are inseparable in this part of Karnataka.

Highlights

  • Sringeri Sharadamba Temple - Adi Shankaracharya's first matha (8th century), 8 AM Abhishekam, Vedic chanting
  • Vidyashankara Temple zodiac pillars - 12 columns each aligned with the sun for its zodiac month, 14th-century
  • Kollur Mookambika darshan - Shakti-Shiva combined form in a forested coastal hill setting, with ropeway access
  • Sri Krishna Matha Kanakana Kindi - the window through which Kanakadasa received Krishna's darshan
  • Udupi Ashta Mathas walking tour - 8 monasteries on Car Street rotating management of the matha every 2 years
