Meghalaya Grand Explorer: Cloud Kingdom Loop

TOUR RATING
New on Evynx

Meghalaya's five landscape zones in one circuit - waterfalls, root bridges, border river.

About this tour

Six days from Guwahati Airport through every major zone of Meghalaya - Shillong colonial hill-station, Mawphlang Sacred Forest, Laitlum Canyons, Cherrapunji waterfall country, the Nongriat Double Decker Living Root Bridge jungle, Mawlynnong village, Dawki border river, and the Jaintia Hills return via Krang Shuri. This is the only itinerary that covers all five distinct landscape zones of the state in a single circuit. The route descends from the Khasi plateau into cloud-forest ravines and back up, crosses into Jaintia Hills river country, and ends at a jade-green river on the Indo-Bangladesh border. The living root bridges at Nongriat - trained over 400 years by Khasi War people using Ficus elastica aerial roots across deep jungle ravines - are the most original natural architecture in India. The Nohkalikai Falls at 340m is India's tallest single-plunge waterfall, running at maximum volume in July and August when the Cherrapunji region receives over 2,000mm of rain per month. Laitlum Canyons fills from below with fast-moving cloud. Dawki's Umngot River runs emerald-green in monsoon, powerful enough to carry traditional longboats with ease. Designed for travellers who want Meghalaya whole rather than in fragments. The 3,500-step Nongriat descent is the physical centrepiece - genuinely demanding - and the two Premium cliffside nights in Cherrapunji and the Dawki glamping night provide the reset. Best June through November.

Highlights

  • Umshiang Double Decker Root Bridge - world's only two-tier Ficus elastica bridge at Nongriat, 400+ years old
  • Nohkalikai Falls - 340m single plunge into mineral-green quartzite pool at full July-August monsoon volume
  • Laitlum Canyons - 200m gorge where monsoon cloud fills from below, opposite canyon wall vanishing into mist
  • Mawlynnong - Asia's Cleanest Village since 2003, bamboo dustbins, Sky Walk tower with Bangladesh plains view
  • Dawki Umngot River - Indo-Bangladesh border river, jade-green with a powerful monsoon current and longboats
