TOUR RATING
New on Evynx

An 8-day Assam circuit linking Kamakhya Temple, Manas, Kaziranga and Majuli.

About this tour

The complete Assam circuit - every defining zone of the Brahmaputra Valley in sequence over eight days, from the Shakti Peetha on Nilachal Hill to the world's largest river island. Guwahati opens the circuit: the Kamakhya Temple - a tantric Shakti Peetha where no idol exists, only a natural rock cleft kept moist by an underground spring - followed by the only way to properly meet the Brahmaputra: from a motor launch at dusk, with the river running 15 km wide and the Guwahati ghats falling behind in golden light. Manas follows, the sub-Himalayan forests of the Bodo hills at the Bhutan border: jeep safaris hunting for Golden Langur - a primate found only between the Manas and Sankosh rivers - and the Pygmy Hog, the world's smallest wild pig, reintroduced into these grasslands from a captive breeding program. Mathanguri, where the crystal-clear Manas River enters India from Bhutan, and a Night Safari on the buffer zone periphery. A six-hour cross-country drive east through the Brahmaputra Valley reaches Kaziranga: the dawn Elephant Safari in morning mist with rhinoceros at 20 metres, the afternoon Gypsy Safari through the Bagori Range for Wild Water Buffalo, and a tea garden walk and bonfire dinner. Majuli closes the circuit: the wooden ferry across the Brahmaputra to the world's largest river island, the Auniati Satra and its Ahom manuscripts, the Samaguri mask workshop, the Mising stilt village and pit-loom weaving, and a private Sattriya classical dance performance at Uttar Kamalabari. Available October 15 to May 31 only.

Highlights

  • Kamakhya Temple, Nilachal Hill - tantric Shakti Peetha where a sacred rock cleft replaces any sculpted deity
  • Manas National Park - the only Indian reserve with Pygmy Hog and Golden Langur alongside Bengal Tiger
  • Kaziranga elephant safari - pre-dawn ride within 20 metres of the One-Horned Rhino in Kohora grassland mist
  • Majuli Island - world's largest river island, reached by Brahmaputra ferry to 22 Vaishnavite satras
  • Samaguri Satra, Majuli - 400-year-old Bhaona mask workshop using bamboo, clay, and natural pigments
