Wayanad Summit Group Treks: Chembra Peak & Thirunelli Temple

TOUR RATING
New on Evynx

A demanding circuit - Chembra Peak's summit trek, waterfall trails, and a forest temple.

About this tour

Three days through Wayanad's trekking and waterfall landscape - opening with the cascading Kanthanpara and Soochipara falls, rising to the 6-7 hour Chembra Peak summit trek at 2,100m with the Heart-Shaped Lake at 1,900m, and closing at the ancient Thirunelli Temple in its Brahmagiri forest valley and Kerala's largest waterfall. This is the trekking variant of Wayanad, distinct from the hills-escape circuit (Edakkal Caves, Banasura Sagar Dam, Pookode Lake). The itinerary is structured around one hard physical day - the Chembra summit - and two waterfall and forest days that bookend it. Chembra Peak (2,100m; the highest point in Wayanad district) is managed by the Kerala Forest Department from the Meppadi Forest Office. The daily cap of approximately 50-60 trekkers is first-come-first-served; permits are secured at the forest office from 6:30 AM, before the cap fills. The Heart-Shaped Lake at 1,900m - a symmetrical high-altitude lake sacred to the Kani tribal community - is the most photographed feature of the circuit. The circuit then drives north to the Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary for the Thirunelli Temple, one of Kerala's oldest Vishnu shrines in a forest valley with a 1,200-year-old granite water aqueduct still in daily use, before the forest trail to Wayanad's Meenmutty Falls (300 metres, three tiers; Kerala's largest waterfall; a different location from the Ponmudi Meenmutty in Thiruvananthapuram district).

Highlights

  • Thamarassery Churam - 9-hairpin ghat road lifting the Calicut coast to Wayanad at 770m in morning mist
  • Kanthanpara and Soochipara Waterfalls - bamboo-shaded cascade and a 200m Sentinel Rock fall with a swim pool
  • Chembra Peak (2,100m) - Wayanad's highest point, reached via 6-7 hours of grassland and Shola forest
  • Heart-Shaped Lake (1,900m) - symmetrical lake sacred to the Kani tribe, seen from the ridge above
  • Thirunelli Temple - 1,200-year-old Vishnu shrine in Brahmagiri forest with a working granite water aqueduct
