About this journey

Panaji's heritage usually comes as two separate three-day tours, each rushing half of what the region holds - one for Old Goa's churches and the Mandovi river islands, the other for the temple and mosque history toward the Western Ghats. This six-day journey folds both into a single slower arc from one Fontainhas heritage stay, with no re-packing and no second hotel. The early days move from Old Goa's churches and the painted Fontainhas quarter to a dawn mangrove boat in the Dr. Salim Ali sanctuary and a full day cycling car-free Divar Island, with a feni stop and a home-cooked islander dinner. A genuinely unhurried Fontainhas morning follows - tile studios, azulejo murals, cashew tasting, and free river time - the pause neither short version had space for. The later days trace the temple history: Ponda's relocated deities, the 1560 Safa mosque, Mahalsa Narayani at Mardol, and Tambdi Surla deep in the forest, before a final slow morning and departure.

Is this journey for you?

We believe the right journey is about alignment, not persuasion.

Ideally, yes if...
  • check_circleYou want both Panaji's island cluster and its inland temple circuit on one trip, unhurried
  • check_circleYou'd rather stay in a single heritage property for five nights than switch hotels mid-trip
  • check_circleYou want a genuinely free day built into the itinerary, not just a lighter final morning
  • check_circleYou're comfortable with two early starts (Day 2's ferry, Day 4-5's temple and forest drives)
May not be for you if...
  • cancelYou want to cover this ground in three tighter days like a standard tour
  • cancelYou're only interested in the islands or only the temples, not both
  • cancelYou'd rather have every day at a brisk, fully-scheduled pace

Panaji(6D)
Panaji - Old Goa, Mandovi Islands, Ponda & Tambdi Surla

Old Goa UNESCO churches, a slow Fontainhas day, Chorao's dawn mangrove boat, Divar Island cycling, the Ponda temple circuit and Safa Shahouri Masjid, Shri Mahalsa Narayani darshan and the Tambdi Surla Mahadeva Temple

Below, you'll find how this journey unfolds - day by day, guided by people who live it.

Essence of Flow

route

The Path Ahead

Private vehicle pickup on arrival, then a short drive to the Old Goa church complex. The afternoon shifts into Fontainhas on foot, and the evening closes with an easy walk to the Mandovi riverfront.

bedtime

The Evening's Sanctuary

First of five nights at a boutique heritage property in the Fontainhas or Ribandar precinct - a restored Portuguese-era townhouse with painted facades and courtyard calm, a short walk from tomorrow's ferry point.

restaurant

Flavours of the Land

Breakfast, lunch and dinner self-planned today - Panaji and Old Goa both have plenty of choice, and your guide can suggest options near the church complex and Fontainhas.

Day 01
Night: Panaji·Drive: 0-2 hrs·Pace: Relaxed
Meeting Time: 7:00 AM
Meeting point: Shared after booking

Old Goa Churches & Fontainhas Walk

Arrival in Goa and a first day among the Basilica of Bom Jesus and Se Cathedral at Old Goa, then Fontainhas' painted lanes and the Mandovi promenade at dusk - a gentle opening before six unhurried days begin.

Basilica of Bom Jesus · Se Cathedral · Fontainhas Latin Quarter · Confeitaria 31 de Janeiro · Mandovi River Promenade

Special Notes: Old Goa's churches are most comfortable before 11 AM; the Fontainhas walk is on uneven cobble lanes, so wear comfortable shoes.
route

The Path Ahead

The Ribandar-Chorao ferry crosses at 6:30 AM for the mangrove boat, then the vehicle carries you to the Naroa jetty for the Divar Island ferry. Bicycles are arranged on arrival for the village circuit, with the vehicle waiting at day's end.

bedtime

The Evening's Sanctuary

Second night at the same Fontainhas or Ribandar heritage stay - you return from Divar by the last evening ferry, so nothing changes tonight except a well-earned, unhurried rest after a full island day.

restaurant

Flavours of the Land

Breakfast at the stay before departure; lunch on Divar Island is self-planned; dinner is a home-cooked Goan-Catholic meal at an islander's house, included in the package.

Day 02
Night: Panaji·Drive: 0-2 hrs·Pace: Balanced
Meeting Time: 05:45 AM
Meeting point: At hotel in Panaji

Chorao Mangroves & Divar Island

A 5:45 AM start for the Ribandar ferry and a silent dawn boat through Chorao's mangroves, then a full day on Divar Island - cycling village lanes, a hilltop church, a feni tasting, and a home-cooked islander dinner.

Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary · Ribandar-Chorao Ferry · Divar Island Cycling · Our Lady of Compassion Church · Feni Distillation · Islander Dinner

Special Notes: The 6:30 AM sanctuary boat needs a 5:45 AM departure - an early night on Day 1 helps; the guide confirms the last Naroa return ferry on the day.
route

The Path Ahead

No fixed departure time today - a late start into Fontainhas for the tile studios and Mario Miranda azulejo murals, a cashew tasting stop, and then genuinely free time by the Mandovi riverfront or a quiet local bakery before evening.

bedtime

The Evening's Sanctuary

Third night at the same Fontainhas or Ribandar heritage stay, with the whole day built around staying close to it rather than covering ground - a deliberate pause before tomorrow's temple circuit begins.

restaurant

Flavours of the Land

Breakfast at the stay; a cashew and bakery tasting stop stands in for a formal lunch; dinner is self-planned, with your guide happy to suggest a quiet riverside spot.

Day 03
Night: Panaji·Drive: 0-2 hrs·Pace: Relaxed
Meeting Time: 10:00 AM
Meeting point: At hotel in Panaji

A Slow Day in Fontainhas

The day this journey adds that neither rushed circuit ever had room for - an unhurried Fontainhas morning of tile studios and cashew tasting, then free time by the Mandovi river with nowhere to be.

Fontainhas Tile Studios · Mario Miranda Azulejos · Goa Cashew Tasting · Confeitaria 31 de Janeiro · Mandovi Riverfront

Special Notes: This day has no early start and no fixed itinerary beyond the Fontainhas stop - treat it as free time with a guide on call rather than a scheduled tour.
route

The Path Ahead

An early drive to Ponda taluka for morning darshan, timed to finish before the temples' midday closure. The spice plantation lunch fills the gap, and the vehicle returns you to Shri Ramnath and the Safa Masjid once temples reopen around 4 PM.

bedtime

The Evening's Sanctuary

Fourth night back at the same Fontainhas or Ribandar heritage stay in Panaji - the temple circuit is a day trip out and back, so nothing about the base changes tonight.

restaurant

Flavours of the Land

Breakfast at the stay; lunch is a traditional Goan spread on banana leaves at a Ponda spice plantation, included; dinner back in Panaji is self-planned.

Day 04
Night: Panaji·Drive: 2-4 hrs·Pace: Balanced
Meeting Time: 07:00 AM
Meeting point: At hotel in Panaji

Ponda's Temple Circuit

A full day in Ponda taluka - morning darshan at Shri Mangueshi and Shri Shantadurga, a spice plantation lunch during the temples' midday closure, then Shri Ramnath and the 1560 Safa Shahouri Masjid once they reopen.

Shri Mangueshi Temple · Shri Shantadurga Temple · Ponda Spice Plantation Lunch · Shri Ramnath Temple · Safa Shahouri Masjid

Special Notes: Ponda temples close roughly 12:30-4 PM daily - the guide times the circuit precisely around this; footwear removed at every temple and the Safa Masjid.
route

The Path Ahead

The drive east to Mardol for darshan, then further into the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary on a forest track for the last 14 km to Tambdi Surla. The same vehicle brings you back to the Panaji base by evening rather than heading onward.

bedtime

The Evening's Sanctuary

Fifth and final night at the same Fontainhas or Ribandar heritage stay - you return from the forest temple by evening, so tonight is simply a return to the same room rather than a new check-in.

restaurant

Flavours of the Land

Breakfast at the stay; lunch near Mollem is self-planned, since there is no commercial infrastructure at Tambdi Surla itself; dinner back in Panaji is self-planned.

Day 05
Night: Panaji·Drive: 2-4 hrs·Pace: Balanced
Meeting Time: 07:00 AM
Meeting point: At hotel in Panaji

Mahalsa Darshan & Tambdi Surla

East to Mardol for Shri Mahalsa Narayani darshan, then 14 km into the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary for the 12th-century Tambdi Surla Mahadeva Temple, before the drive back to Panaji in the evening.

Shri Mahalsa Narayani Temple · Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary · Tambdi Surla Mahadeva Temple

Special Notes: Carry water from Mardol - there are no vendors at Tambdi Surla; the forest road can be soft in heavy monsoon and the guide assesses conditions on the day.
route

The Path Ahead

No fixed morning activity - checkout at leisure from the Fontainhas stay, then the departure transfer to Dabolim Airport (around 45-60 minutes) or Mopa Airport (around 60 minutes), timed against your confirmed flight.

bedtime

The Evening's Sanctuary

A last unhurried morning at the same Fontainhas or Ribandar heritage stay before checkout - five nights in the same painted-facade townhouse end with nothing to pack up in a hurry.

restaurant

Flavours of the Land

Breakfast at the stay before checkout; no further meals included today, timed around your departure transfer.

Day 06
Drive: 0-2 hrs·Pace: Relaxed
Meeting Time: 10:00 AM
Meeting point: At hotel in Panaji

Final Morning & Departure

A final slow morning at the same Fontainhas heritage stay, checkout at leisure, then the departure transfer to Dabolim or Mopa airport - no sightseeing squeezed in against the clock.

Fontainhas Heritage Stay · Mandovi Riverfront · Departure Transfer

Special Notes: Dabolim (GOI) is the closer airport; Mopa (GOX) is also served. The guide plans departure time backwards from your confirmed flight or train.
