Jaisalmer's Heritage and Khuri's Craft

Unhurried Jaisalmer days and group nights with Khuri's craft community.

About this journey

This six-day group journey leaves the Sam Dunes safari to the region's other trips and instead gives Khuri's craft community a full day of its own - the block-printers, embroiderers, and camel-wool weavers who are usually reduced to a single dune-sunset stop. It opens with two slow days in Jaisalmer town: a sunset rowboat on Gadisar Lake, then a full day across the fort's seven-storey Raj Mahal and the carved havelis of the merchant quarter. The middle day threads through the cenotaphs of Bada Bagh and the abandoned village of Kuldhara before the drive to Khuri, where three nights follow - a hands-on craft day with artisan families, a quiet dune walk, and a group sunset with a single folk singer on ridges that see a fraction of Sam's crowds. A fixed-date group departure on a shared Tempo Traveller, for travellers who want Khuri's living craft, not just its sand.

Is this journey for you?

We believe the right journey is about alignment, not persuasion.

Ideally, yes if...
  • check_circleYou want genuine hands-on time with a desert village's artisan families, not a brief workshop stop
  • check_circleYou've already done, or plan to do, the Sam Dunes camel-and-jeep safari as a separate experience
  • check_circleYou want an unhurried two-day pace through Jaisalmer Fort and its havelis rather than one rushed afternoon
  • check_circleYou're happy travelling with a shared group on fixed departure dates rather than arranging a private custom-dates trip
May not be for you if...
  • cancelYou want the Sam Sand Dunes safari built into this same trip
  • cancelYou're after a fast-paced circuit covering the maximum number of sights in minimum days
  • cancelYou need a private vehicle and fully custom dates rather than a shared group departure

Jaisalmer Arrival · Gadisar Lake · Sunset Rowboat Cruise

Special Notes: The Gadisar Lake rowboat cruise is timed for the final hour before sunset; the group's guide confirms the exact slot on arrival.
route

The Path Ahead

No long drive today - the whole day stays within Jaisalmer's old town, moving on foot as a group between the fort's ramparts and the merchant quarter's haveli lanes at a genuinely unhurried pace, with a local history guide throughout.

Second night at the same Luxury-tier stone resort in Jaisalmer, a comfortable base for a day spent almost entirely on foot within the fort and the old town's haveli lanes.

Fort and Havelis, Unhurried

A full, unhurried day inside Jaisalmer Fort's seven-storey Raj Mahal and resident Jain temples, then the carved facades of Patwon Ki Haveli, Salim Singh Ki Haveli and Nathmal Ki Haveli - spread across the day, not rushed into one afternoon.

Jaisalmer Fort · Raj Mahal · Patwon Ki Haveli · Salim Singh Ki Haveli · Nathmal Ki Haveli

Special Notes: Footwear comes off before entering the fort's Jain temple inner sanctums; carry clean socks for the stone floors.
route

The Path Ahead

bedtime

The Evening's Sanctuary

Check into a Luxury-tier heritage cottage estate in Khuri village for the first of three nights here, a quiet mud-and-thatch base for tomorrow's craft-immersion day and the dune evenings that follow.

Cenotaphs to Khuri

A morning among Bada Bagh's royal cenotaphs, a stop at the abandoned Paliwal Brahmin settlement of Kuldhara, then the group's drive southwest to Khuri village, settling into a heritage cottage estate ahead of three unhurried nights here.

Bada Bagh · Kuldhara · Khuri Arrival

Special Notes: Kuldhara's abandonment is popularly dated to 1825, though records show a more gradual 19th-century decline - guides present both versions.
route

The Path Ahead

No dune safari today - the whole day stays inside Khuri village itself, walking as a group between artisan family homes and workshop courtyards at an unhurried pace, with a local guide introducing each craft and family along the way.

bedtime

The Evening's Sanctuary

Second night at the same heritage cottage estate in Khuri, an easy walk from the artisan families and workshop courtyards visited through the day.

Block Printing · Mirror-Work Embroidery · Camel-Wool Weaving · Village Walk

Special Notes: This is a village-immersion day, not a dune safari - the Sam Dunes camel and jeep safari runs as a separate experience elsewhere in the catalog.
route

The Path Ahead

No long drive today - a short walk from the cottage estate reaches Khuri's own dune ridges for the morning walk, with the same short stretch covered again at dusk for the group sunset sitting.

bedtime

The Evening's Sanctuary

Third and final night at the same Khuri cottage estate, before tomorrow's drive back into Jaisalmer for departure.

Quiet Dunes & Group Sunset

A quiet morning walk across Khuri's own low-traffic dune ridges, free of Sam's crowds, followed by a group evening on the sand with a single folk singer rather than a staged performance.

Khuri Dune Walk · Group Sunset · Folk Singer

Special Notes: Khuri's dunes see a fraction of Sam's visitor traffic - the group's single-singer sunset is a deliberate contrast to any staged desert-camp program.
route

The Path Ahead

After a relaxed breakfast and checkout, the shared Tempo Traveller carries the group back along the quiet desert track into Jaisalmer's old town, with the morning and early afternoon left free for the bazaars before the departure transfer.

bedtime

The Evening's Sanctuary

A final morning at the same Khuri cottage estate before checkout, the trip's last stop before the drive back into Jaisalmer for departure.

Cottage Breakfast · Jaisalmer Bazaars · Departure
