EXPERIENCE RATING
New on EvynxKanakana Kindi darshan, the Ashta Mathas of Car Street, and Anantha Padmanabha Temple.
About this experience
Udupi's identity is inseparable from Sri Krishna Matha, the Dvaita Vedanta seat founded by Madhvacharya, and this walking-only day is built entirely around its rituals and the lane that surrounds it. Your guide times the visit for the Sayam puja at 6:30pm, with unhurried time at the Kanakana Kindi - the small window where the saint-poet Kanakadasa is said to have received Krishna's darshan when the western wall cracked open for him. A walk along Car Street covers the Ashta Mathas, the eight monasteries that rotate management of the matha every two years, before a quieter close at Anantha Padmanabha Temple, a lesser-visited Vaishnava shrine with its own temple tank. No vehicle is used all day.
Highlights
- Kanakana Kindi - the wall window where saint Kanakadasa received Krishna's darshan through a crack
- Ashta Mathas - eight monasteries on Car Street rotating management of the matha every two years
- Sayam puja - evening ritual at Sri Krishna Matha with nadaswaram and a lit sanctum
- Anantha Padmanabha Temple - a quieter Vaishnava shrine with a peaceful temple tank
- Car Street - brass-lamp workshops, incense stalls and Udupi's oldest vegetarian eateries
